RETURN TO NATURE
ABOUT RECENT WORKS BY PARK CHUL

A recent news report says that a Korean Paper from Won-ju presented in Paris, France, in honor of the 120th anniversary since Korea and France established the normalization, has won acclaims from the local citizens. Inspired by the news, the hosting leadership is planning to open a show room for exhibition, downtown Paris, sooner or later. This is a good news for industries concerned and artists dedicating to their works, in spite of difficult situations. Given the recently-booming fever of Korean Wave, it leaves a noticeable impression that such climate is far from only artists of Korean paper. But, the fever emerging in Paris, is cited as being more significant in that Korean Paper has been very popular in Paris. This phenomenon gives the hope that the work of Korean Paper would get a good opportunity to be highlighted, in the future.

When it comes to the work ol Korean Paper, Park Chul is one of typical artists who are drawing attention from the nation. Going back to the Korean Modern Art History, the work of Korean Paper, has originated from early in the 1970s, but, it was since the mid of the 1980s, when the The possibility as expression medium of the Korean Paper emerged in full swing. As the inherent attribute of Korean Paper, was leading painters to get new insight, the plethora of explorations on such Korean Paper have appeared. In the mid ol the 1980s, the Korean Painting World started to develop the study of the Korean inherent cultural identity, along with the interest in Korean independent paintings, in a bid to take strategic measures against what' s called western painting. The works by Park Chul were just suitable for the contemporary situations. It is obvious that the embossed picture began to arise in late of the 1980s, but, the works of Chinese ink with Chinese drawing paper and cotton cloth, had already been in bud in the 1970s.

It was early in the 1990s, when the embossed picture by Park Chul began to attract full attention from the painting world. With the beginning of a private exhibition, in Hilton Art Gallery in 1990, several private views held in art galleries at home and abroad, including Paris the Netherlands and Canada, make the remarkable contributions to making him one of typical artists of Korean Paper in Korea. In particular, his technique of embossed picture helped him make the distinct and stark distinction compared with works by other artists of Korean Paper. It was so as he presented the unique plastic arts. Selecting cultural heritages such as traditional roofing tile, window frame, and round straw mats, which were full of soul of Korean ancestors, the embossed picture by Park Chul has secured the solid position in the fierce fever of post-modernism.

From early to mid of the 1990s Park Chul payed attention to combining violin, one of western musical instruments, with round straw mat and roofing tile, in a picture. This is interpreted as an intention to explore another aesthetic value based on heterogenic factors of plastic arts. As a full-time artist, Park Chul poured efforts and passions into Korean Paper. This is plainly demonstrated in his works that he have produced for the past twenty years. His various materials and applications based on embossed picture, presented a striking distinction in his works.

Through a recent plastic experiment, Park Chul states with a remark that “Korean Paper is rusting". Such remark smacks of the typical language that any artist uses. This is interpreted as the meaning of what's called ‘beauty of oxidation’ . His recent art works are featured as the color of dark brown dominating the picture, and at the same time, making a more remarkable feature of embossed picture, compared with existing works. it is similar what just as steel is eroded. Abandoning the acrylic color typical of the past preferred method, he currently prefers the natural dye products such as gallnut, betel palm, clove, acorn, chestnut, wormwood, sappan wood, safflower, and amur cork tree. His introduction of the materials mainly used in traditional dye products, has close something to do with ‘Objects' that he is using these days Park Chul Artist is employing the Korean traditional window frame(Chang-Ho), as what's called the sort of 'Object' . The window paper is functioned as the ‘frame' of art. Such window frame is transformed as the art work, getting out of the general context of a mere 'window frame'.

Going back 1994 ago ten years ago from now, i summarized his work as the headline, 'Formation & Extinction', in the subject of a private exhibition. I think that the headline still holds true even now. ‘Formation and Extinction' of all things with time and tide, is the inevitable providence ot the universe. Park Artist has used Korean Paper to term ‘Formation and Extinction’, of all things based on the technique of embossed picture. Most ‘Objects' described in his pictures, are vaguely raising their heads like unearthed ruins on the spot. And. they look getting out of their long images. The embossed picture by Park Chul is the emblem representative of forms that ‘Objects' take on, in aspect of passing time. The work by Korean Paper by Park Chul portrays the aspiration for nature, and advance to beautiful nature landscape. It is true as he is carrying out eco-friendly art works.
